TEACHERS’ ADJACENCY PAIRS, TURN TAKING AND POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN ORDINARY CONVERSATIONS OF MTs NW AIK ANYAR SUKAMULIA EAST LOMBOK

Abstract

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study were to know about: (1) the forms of adjacency pairs among the teachers, (2) how teachers get turn taking, and (3) what are the politeness strategies of using adjacency pairs in ordinary conversations among the teachers at MTs NW Aik Anyar Sukamulia East Lombok. The design of this study was qualitative design. While the approaches used were conversation analysis and pragmatics. Conversation analysis focused on the structure of conversation would be adopted to figure out the  forms of adjency pairs as well as turn taking rules. In this case, the main principle was based on Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson  on sequential organization of conversation in terms of adjacency pairs and turn taking. Meanwhile, in analyzing politeness strategies, by adopting Brown and Levinson theory.Therefore, in this study, conversation and pragmatics were integrated in analyzing and  examining the forms of adjacency pairs, turn taking  and politeness strategies. In accordance with the purposes of this study, a qualitative method was used in analysing the gathered data. The data was collected through observation, recording and interview.The result found were six forms of adjacency pairs namely: (1) greeting / greeting, (2) inform / acknowledge, (3) question / answer, (4) complaint / excuse, (5) request for permission / acceptance, (6) and suggestion / acceptance.  Regarding  the way the teachers take turns in talks, the study found were four ways the current speakers select the next speaker: (1) addressed question, (2) tag question, (3) one word question, (4)  utterance involving two speaker with one of them giving response to first part utterance signaling social relationship. In accordance with politeness strategies used in teacher talks, the study found four politeness strategies occur in terms of face threatening acts: (1) the acts of threatening speaker negative face, (2) the acts threatened speaker positive face, (3) the acts threatening addressee negative face by speaker, (4) and the acts threatening addressee (A) positive face by speakers.
